A number of years ago I held the hand of a 19yo young woman while she underwent a second violation after she had been raped, but this one she consented to. A rape kit consists of numerous containers, envelopes, and instruments used to collect evidence from her body so that if she chose at some point in the future to press charges against the man who raped her the items in the rape kit could be used to accomplish his arrest and conviction. Cotton swabs of various lengths and sizes were inserted into her orifices and then sealed in envelopes. They combed her pubic hair to perhaps obtain some of the perpetrator's hair. Several strands of her own hair were pulled out by the root from her head and her pubic area and placed in labeled envelopes. Small wooden sticks were used to scrape out any material that lingered under her fingernails. She was worried that it didn't count as a rape because she made him wear a condom. Earlier I had helped her collect her clothing, the bedsheets, and the aforementioned condom from her room. Those items were labeled and placed in the rape kit. She repeatedly said no throughout the ordeal. She knew the man who raped her, as victims commonly do. Cleaned out? That's what you think a rape kit is for?
