The Great Flood
When roused in the middle of the night from a deep and restful sleep, the words you really don't want to hear are, Mom? The basement's flooding!! After shutting off the supply to the toilet, we spent the next two hours mopping, sopping up, and wet-vaccing all the parts of the basement that are downhill from the bathroom. Today everything is nearly dry as you can see in this photo. That's a genuine 1950's harvest gold toilet, children. It might be an antique by now. Maybe just vintage.
This is the weird part. Even though Reid shut down the flood by, he thought, totally closing the water supply valve to the toilet, the tank is filling up like normal and there is no leaking to be found! Normal flushing is going on just like there was no tsunamic disaster in the wee hours of this morning. I'm perfectly willing to go with the possibility that this house is equipped with self-healing plumbing if that's what it takes to keep the basement floor dry. But just in case, a plastic pan has been strategically placed under the valve and my trusty pink mop is standing guard.
Just an afterthought, people. If you are going to install new flooring in a bathroom, man or woman up, pull the toilet first and then re-install it on top of the new flooring! Notching out the tile around the base of the toilet is just bad form. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy as well a peevish pet peeve of mine.
