Getting it Wrong

I likely made a serious tactical error in allowing a third party to scan my timeline, but what's done is done. I'm wondering how it's possible that there is no mention of any type of booze. And I'm clearly showing favoritism toward Reid over Michael since his name is larger. I'll need some time to fully digest the meaning of this graphic. Until then, I remain astonished that there are zero epithets shown here.

Enlightening Project

Since the sun will be relentless for another month or so, darkness in my living room isn't an issue right now. But I was considering the dark days of winter ahead and how it would be nice to have a little more light in the north end of the room. And even nicer if those lights would come on when I hit the wall switch near the front door.

Not being an electrician sort of person, though that hasn't stopped me from swapping out a light fixture or two in the past, I needed to find sconce lights that could be plugged into an outlet rather than hard-wired in. I ended up choosing these with Tiffany-style glass shades. Then they sat around in the box for a couple of weeks while I contemplated how to hang them up and the best positioning. And because visible cords annoy me considerably, I found paintable plastic conduit thingys to cover them up. 

Turning 180 degrees, look how coordinated this space has become! My dining room also has a lovely Tiffany style light fixture!

My house was built in 1959, and despite considerable electrical upgrades two years ago, there just aren't enough outlets! Only one of them is operated by the wall switch, so some artful stringing of extension cords was necessary to accomplish this. I enjoy uttering let there be light ever so quietly when flipping the wall switch.

Meager Harvest

Expansion!

So. Last summer I put together this cute little rock garden in the middle of the front yard. The idea being that such a thing plus a great deal of mulch would be more attractive than dead grass and weeds. The idea also being that I would expand the planting area each year.

Fast forward to this year. Finding more rocks and interesting, funky-looking logs in the backyard, they were relocated to the front. 

The process is a bit like putting a puzzle together. Moving the pieces around until they fit into the curves of the ground and more or less line up with each other to contain soil and plants.

With the final arrangement determined, it's time to add soil and plants. I have made a real effort toward putting in perennial plants that once established will have minimal water needs. This is, after all, my attempt at xeriscaping. Replacing a water-hogging and high maintenance traditional lawn with plants that are drought tolerant, while tossing in some lights and other decorations.

I've been testing out these sweet solar hanging lanterns in the backyard with the idea of moving them to the front to add a finishing touch to the expanded rock garden.
