They passed on my novel, but the poetry collection is still under consideration. Tomorrow is the final day of the submission period for this publisher. And yes, I am checking my email every five seconds. Indeed, the waiting is the hardest part.

So is it like scientific publishing, where they tell you what needs to be changed in order to make it publishable?

You get the work in the most "done" shape that you can without benefit of an editor, then submit, submit, submit. Sometimes you get comments, mostly just a very impersonal brush-off. It's tricky to submit without an agent to advise and steer you who knows the market, but getting an agent is almost more difficult than getting published to begin with. Makes the writing a piece of cake by comparison!
