Ancient Diagram

In the latter stages of demolition for the installation of the final piece of new countertop, an ancient diagram was revealed.

It is believed that the diagram foretold the shape and form of the cabinet yet to come. An archaeological dig, right here in my kitchen.

Squirrel Stealth

Sometimes I'm sitting in my office, minding my own business, and feel like I'm being watched. Then I look up.

Progress!

A tiny bit of order has been established in the kitchen. It is fully functional again now that the stove is back where it belongs. I would have put it off longer, but I couldn't find an extension cord that worked. So yes. There is still cabinet painting, ceiling repair and painting, and more tile to install and grout. I am delighted with any little bit of progress. Next Monday the final piece of countertop gets installed! First I must cut approximately one inch off the top of the end cabinet so things will line up all level and stuff. I'm mostly giving my hands a day of rest today after pulling my quota of weeds and rescuing a tiny bunny from Reid's window well. Seems like a good day to grocery shop. I have a stove again! Let the cooking begin!

My Kitchen is Everywhere

In the living room.

More in the living room.

In the sunroom.

In the dining room.

Because this is the current state of the kitchen.

Look at that new granite countertop! Isn't it lovely! See the backsplash area prepped for tiling! There comes a point in a project when you can no longer remember how much you wanted to update any part of the house. I have arrived at that point as far as the kitchen redo is concerned. Things are coming along and at this point the work is all mine. Mostly tiling and painting remain and now I can do the rest at my own pace. The plumber showed up this morning to hook up supply to the new faucet and drainage for the new sink. By the weekend the stove should be back in its place and the kitchen will again be fully functional, if lacking somewhat in the cosmetic department. Despite my exhaustion and how cranky my hands are, I'm so happy how things are coming together.

Deadwood With Miss Melissa

So. I said to Jill, "I don't know about you, but when she sings Come To My Window, I'm dancing." Just as the opening chords were playing, we both rushed the stage. And stayed for six more songs. It was excellent.

Sixty-Two and Counting

The year? 1979. Doing my Gilda Radner impersonation. These were the dark days, children, before hair products existed that could tame the frizz and curls and make them more attractive and approachable. God knows what might be nesting in that hair. Forty years later, I am cheerfully embarking on FYC 62. My hair is tamer now. My little sis is 57 this year, which means my birth year is her age and vice versa. After a quick Google search, the thing I find most interesting about 62 is that it is the sum of the faces, edges, and vertices of an icosahedron or a dodecahedron. Also, it is the number of faces of two of the Archimedean solids, the rhombicosi dodecahedron and the truncated icosidodecahedron. I do find mathematics fascinating. Oh, and if you want to direct dial Indonesia, you need to know that 62 is their international code. And I now qualify to collect Social Security. Though I won't apply yet, each year I wait means that I get a larger benefit. Happy birthday to me! I was born on a Tuesday and this year I celebrate on a Tuesday. Maybe there's something mystical and magical about that, maybe not. I'm going with the maybe, mostly because I'm one of those eternal optimist sort of people.

I'm a Valuable Antique

Fifty-one years ago I turned eleven. Seriously, count the candles. Tomorrow I'll need a fire permit with 62 candles on the cake. Bigger cake! A much bigger cake will be needed. I really need to stop doing the math.

Almost Five

Me again. Probably just prior to my fifth birthday. I know this because the rest of the photo, which was damaged and cropped out, features my baby sister Martine cradled by our father and our older brother is looking on. If you did the math, too, you will know that I am five years older than my sis. Actually four years, ten months, and thirty days older. But who's counting! Me. Because my birthday is now a mere seven days, that's right, one week away. Is it too soon for cake?

Let The Birthday Month Begin!

FYC*, the 62 Edition, is just over a week away. That's 1yo me in the high chair, my dad is holding my cake, presumably taunting me with it as I ignore him, and my older brother, Scott, appears to be smearing his cooties on the high chair tray. I have no actual memory of this incident. If a photo exists of the ceremonial lighting of the candle followed by my chubby fists digging into the cake, I have not seen it. But it kinda looks like I'm wearing a bib so let's just say I'm prepared to destroy and gobble. Stay tuned for more blasts from the past featuring me, cake, and candles.
